A history spanning more than 50 years
Let's go back to 1842, when Ludwig Wurmböck, a pharmacist from Graz, bought the building in which the Tyrol now stands. Here, the pharmacist produced medicines of the highest quality and effectiveness, which made him famous throughout the Tyrol. His son Erich carried on this passion, as did his son Otto.
In 1961, his brother Erich opened the Picnic restaurant with his wife Ida, an establishment that quickly became a great success. In 1968, work began to extend the entire building, culminating in the birth of the Sporthotel Tyrol in 1969. The Picnic Tavern was also created in the beautiful 17th century cellar, which became a popular meeting place for tourists and locals alike. With the untimely death of mother Ida in 1991, Erich and his sons Dieter (Monny), Sabine and Karin pursued their goals following Ida's example of tenacity and determination. Years of expansion and various improvements followed.
Since 2006, it has been Monny and his wife Giovanna, with the careful supervision of grandfather Erich, who run today's Il Tyrol, while Sabine and Karin take care of the residence. Monny and Giovanna's children, namely Viktor, Ludwig and Marialucia, are a great inspiration and collaborate when they can with a sense of hospitality and commitment.
2015 marks an important expansion phase, but also unfortunately the closure of the historic Picnic restaurant to make way for the hotel tables. More surprises will follow and we will not fail to update you!
